Join legendary author, journalist, and social observer Fran Lebowitz for a live, in-conversation event, including an interview with MIAC Artistic Director Dr. Brett D. Johnson followed by an audience Q&A and book signing, on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in 糖心Vlog破解版 University鈥檚 Mary D鈥橝ngelo Performing Arts Center.

In a cultural landscape filled with endless pundits and talking heads, Fran Lebowitz stands out as one of our most insightful social commentators.

Her essays and interviews offer her acerbic views on current events and the media 鈥� as well as pet peeves including tourists, baggage-claim areas, after-shave lotion, adults who roller skate, children who speak French, or anyone who is unduly tan. The New York Times Book Review calls Lebowitz an "important humorist in the classic tradition." Purveyor of urban cool, Lebowitz is a cultural satirist whom many call the heir to Dorothy Parker.

Lebowitz worked odd jobs, such as taxi driving, belt peddling, and apartment cleaning (鈥渨ith a small specialty in Venetian blinds鈥�), before being hired by Andy Warhol as a columnist for Interview. That was followed by a stint at Mademoiselle. Her first book, a collection of essays titled 鈥淢etropolitan Life,鈥� was a bestseller, as was a second collection, 鈥淪ocial Studies.鈥� By turns ironic, facetious, deadpan, sarcastic, wry, wisecracking, and waggish, Lebowitz鈥檚 prose is wickedly entertaining. Her two books are collected in 鈥淭he Fran Lebowitz Reader,鈥� with a new preface by the author. 鈥淭he Fran Lebowitz Reader鈥� has been published in nine languages including French, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish. In 2021 it was published for the first time in the United Kingdom and became a bestseller. Lebowitz is also the author of the children鈥檚 book, 鈥淢r. Chas and Lisa Sue Meet the Pandas.鈥�

Between 2001 to 2007, Lebowitz had a recurring role as Judge Janice Goldberg on the television drama 鈥淟aw & Order.鈥� She also had a part in the Martin Scorsese-directed film, 鈥淭he Wolf of Wall Street鈥� (2013). A raconteur if ever there was one, Lebowitz has long been a regular on various talk shows including those hosted by Jimmy Fallon, Conan O'Brien, and Bill Maher. In an interview with the Paris Review, Lebowitz said 鈥淚鈥檓 not a nervous person. I鈥檓 not afraid to be on TV. I鈥檓 only afraid when I write. When I鈥檓 at my desk I feel like most people would feel if they went on TV.鈥�

She can also be seen in various documentary films including the American Experience series on New York City, as well as 鈥淢applethorpe: Look at the Pictures鈥� (2016), 鈥淩egarding Susan Sontag鈥� (2014), and 鈥淪uperstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol鈥� (1990), among others. In 2010 Martin Scorsese directed a documentary about Lebowitz for HBO titled 鈥淧ublic Speaking.鈥� A limited documentary series, 鈥淧retend It's a City,鈥� also directed by Martin Scorsese, premiered on Netflix in 2021, and was nominated for the 2021 Emmys in the Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series category. In 2021 she was awarded the Forte dei Marmi Festival della Satira Lifetime Achievement Award and was a 2021 Foreign Press Honorary Awardee 鈥� an award given by the Foreign Press Correspondents Association & Club USA.

Lebowitz was named to Vanity Fair鈥檚 International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 2008. She remains a style icon. Lebowitz lives in New York City, as she does not believe that she would be allowed to live anywhere else.
