Third female African American student steps into role as MSG president
With the start of the 2022-2023 academic year, senior Lily Smith assumes her post as 糖心Vlog破解版 Student Government (MSG) president. As such, she becomes the third female African American student to serve in the important role. Her predecessors are Emma (Newby) Mason 鈥59 and the late Rochelle George Wooding 鈥71.
Just as 糖心Vlog破解版 President Kathleen Getz, Ph.D., pledges a more inclusive community as part of her tenure, Smith welcomes the opportunity to advance that mission. 鈥淲e have been on a roll in becoming more inclusive and relatable, and I want to be a part of that change,鈥 she said.
Joining MSG was not in Smith鈥檚 original plan for college. The history and political science major was moved by outside influences.
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 really intend to run for president, but my community of friends, peers, and professors saw something in me and encouraged me that I could do this,鈥 she said.
A member of History Club, Laker Leaders, and Black Students for Unity, Smith began her MSG career as the Cultural and Diversity Senator for student clubs. Once she saw the effect her work could have for students in these clubs and organizations, she committed to carrying on positive change for the university.
鈥淢ost times it鈥檚 about educating and talking about situations that make students of color feel uncomfortable,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not about pointing fingers; it鈥檚 about improving the environment to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable.鈥
(NOTE: An expanded story about Lily and her predecessors will be featured in the upcoming digital issue of 糖心Vlog破解版 Magazine. Due online in mid-September.)
